A GREEN APPROACH TO PRODUCTION AGRICULTURE
If an improvement in nutrient stewardship is accompanied with improvement to net income, whether by reducing expenses, increasing revenue, or a combination of both the change will be sustainable. Illini FS has confidence that a renewed emphasis on nutrient management through a Systems Approach, accompanied by new tools that provide metrics (measures) to track progress, such as N-TRACKER, will Minimize environmental impact of production agriculture by Optimizing harvest yield (profitability) while Maximizing nutrient utilization. We call it a focus on M.O.M.
WATCHING THE DYNAMICS OF sOIL N
N-TRACKER is a tool created by Illini FS that allows a producer to watch the behavior of plant-available N (PAN) at a point in a field over time. It provides a way to better understand the ups and downs of nitrate and ammonium-N in relationship to soil temperature, rainfall and soil organic matter content. What is learned can be used when modifying a current N Management Plan and to help with developing a N Management System for the next growing season.
RECYCLED QUALITY LIMING PRODUCT
Illini FS Soft Lime is a specially processed (finely ground) limestone is used to remove some of the hardness in raw water before being delivered to urban consumers. Once the limestone has been used for water softening, it is pumped into settling ponds where the solids are allowed to separate from the water. Illini FS periodically removes the settled limestone to make room for additional product. Although it has already served as a water softening agent, the remaining limestone has a higher Effective Neutralizing Value than typical ag lime acquired from a local limestone quarry. It has a Calcium Carbonate Equivalence that approaches 100% (pure limestone) and a fineness efficiency factor of 100% (reactive in year of application). The product is recycled as a premium liming material, utilizing less of our natural resources and minimizing the energy needed to harvest and transport conventional liming sources. Illini FS Soft Lime provides a more efficient way to neutralize soil acidity while reducing the environmental footprint of production agriculture.
TRIPLE SUPER PHOSPHATE OPTION for FALL (Priority Watersheds)
Producers farming within within a priority watershed where nitrate is a water quality impairment should consider Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) as their phosphorus source if dry fertilizer is commonly applied in the Fall. Triple Super Phosphate allows a prescriptive delivery of phosphorus without the application of unaccounted-for N. Although TSP is no longer produced in the United States, GROWMARK, Inc. provides Illini FS a imported premium source of TSP. All that is needed is a little planning and a commitment from the producer to use the product. Visit with your local Illini FS Crop Specialist for more information about TSP and to check on availability.
rECYCLED SULFUR FOR FIELD APPLICATION
Sul-4R-Plus is a repurposed sulfur-containing fertilizer created when sulfur is scrubbed from the smokestacks of coal-fired power plants. When limestone is burnt with coal, sulfur is captured before leaving the stack as a gas. The product formed is calcium sulfate, commonly called gypsum. Using this repurposed product helps the environment by taking advantage of the product's nutrient content, minimizing agriculture's environmental footprint by not using other sulfur sources that need to be mined and processed before use. The additional value of this product is how well it blends with other fertilizers and the form of sulfur provided, sulfate (form the plant can utilize). Visit with your local Illini FS Crop Specialist for more information or to place an order for application.
